Frequently Asked Questions

  • The word “Doula” is the Greek word for “Woman Servant”. A doula is a trained professional who addresses the needs of mothers in childbirth. A doula offers nonjudgmental support, guidance, evidence-based education, and physical support during labor. In simple terms, a doula is a birth coach!

  • Upon hiring a doula, it is important to remember that a doula works for you and not the medical staff. Interactions with medical staff vary based on the circumstances and your provider. It is important to let your provider know if you are hiring a doula. A doula will never speak on your behalf or perform any clinical tasks.

  • You can hire a doula for any of your birth preferences! A doula will help educate, support, and prepare you for your medicated, unmedicated, and/or cesarean birth experience. Keep in mind that your provider and nurse may only be present for a very small portion of the time while a doula is present for the entirety of the labor. All mothers deserve support that promotes labor and provides a safe emotional space regardless of the outcome.

  • A doula will never replace your birth partner. The role of a doula will only enhance your experience with your birth partner by providing evidence-based education and coaching for you and your partner on how you can work together to achieve a joyful birth experience.
